This commentary is the last paper published by the Grand Lady of primary care, Barbara Starfield. Many tributes have already been made to her, which I can only give my humble affirmation to.
This last paper is a commentary guiding two other papers in the journal of epidemiology and community health (Revitalising primary healthcare requires an equitable global economic system – now more than ever, by Sanders et al; and Primary health care and the social determinants of health: essential and complementary approaches for reducing inequities in health, by Rasanathan et al). Starfield explains with the patience of a wise mother the difference between primary care and primary health care, than progressing with an analysis of how the former gradually evolved into something closer to the latter. A must read, if not least to respect the author and her life-time achievements.
